She spent 10years at this first job before leaving to work as personal secretary to a family friend, Arthur Lowe, who had a factory in Onehunga manufacturing 'Twin Peach' noodles and spring rolls amongst other food products. She worked for Arthur till he moved to Australia in the 1970's. She then did typing for his brother Jim Lowe who was President of the Vege Growers Association. After her youngest child started school she worked part time for an Insurance assessor.

Ehlin married Bon August Young at St. Lukes Presbyterian Church in Remuera on 29 February 1964 and they have four children: Jillian Stuart Allister and Louise.

Ehlin's interests have always been ballet, music and reading. About 1992 she started working in the office of the Auckland Ballet Academy going on to become administrator. She is now retired but continues to do work for the Ballet Academy.
