William Hing (Wong Jook)黃 金竹
William Hing aka Wong Gum Jook
William Hing known to chinese as Wong Jook was the fifth child of Wong Wah Hing and She Yeong of Barn Mei En, Zhongshan. He arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on 9th July 1919 via Fiji where he had some schooling at Marist Brothers' School in Suva.The boat he came on was the 'Talune'. One of his older brothers Wong Kum Siu was already here. One of his text books had his name in it and the date 26-4-16 so presume he had 2-3yrs education there.
He set up a fruitshop business in Newmarket at 212 Broadway in the early 1920's - the shop was named Sing Lee and Co. In June 1926 he sailed back to China on the 'Marama' . He was going back to get married. He arrived back in Wellington on the 'Maunganui' on the 10 May 1927 with my mother Leung Ei Jun who was from Fook Chung, Zhongshan,
Ei Jun died after the birth of their 4th daughter on 31 Oct.1943. Wong Jook remarried in 1944 to Chiu Su Ha and they had a daughter Mai Ying (Meyun) born Nov 1945 and a son James born April 1950.
Wong Jook retired from the shop 1968/69 and moved from the old family home at 479 Khyber Pass Rd. to 43 Torrance St. Epsom. In 1970 he took his first holiday / overseas trip to Hawaii to visit his older sister. He also visited Hong Kong on the way home. Came back not well and from then until his death in 1973 his health deteriorated. He sufferd a series of minor strokes and in Nov. 1973 he was admitted into Cornwall Hospital for reassessment. There on 6 Dec. he suffered a heart attack (pulmonary embolism) and died.
