Celebrate Chinese New Year at Manukau Libraries
Manukau Libraries have organised a variety of colourful entertainment to celebrate the Chinese New Year – the Year of the Tiger during February.
Taoist meditation, lion dancing, Chinese knotting, cooking demonstrations, calligraphy, tea testing and Chinese-themed story time are just some of the activities visitors can enjoy at a number of Manukau Libraries.
Jiannan Wang, Manukau Libraries outreach coordinator community cultures says, “The event provides a wonderful opportunity for the city’s Chinese community to share their vibrant culture with other Manukau residents.
“It is also a great chance for our staff to promote our growing Chinese book collection,” says Ms Wang.
Manukau Libraries have more than 20,000 Chinese books and magazines with 4,000 added each year. The books are very popular with 215,000 borrowed annually.
Chinese collections are available at Howick, Highland Park, Pakuranga, Botany, City Centre and Papatoetoe Libraries.
Ms Wang invites all Manukau residents to join in the week-long Chinese New Year celebrations. She guarantees a distinctive Chinese cultural experience for all the family to enjoy with new events for 2010.
Best of all it’s free.
