Huichun (揮春), Chuntie (春帖) or Futie (福帖) is a Chinese New Year tradition. People write lucky messages or new year wishes on pieces of rectangular red paper to decorate their houses and to bring good luck for the coming year. Huichun is usually in four words written with brushes and ink. It can be generic for everybody like safety (老少平安) , good health (龍馬精神), good luck (大吉大利), or simply happy new year (恭贺新禧); or specific to business people (prosperous business 生意興隆), women (always youthful 青春常駐), school students (doing well at school 學業進步) and the elderly (healthy and vigorous 身壯力健). After the new year's eve dinner, the whole family will gather to decorate the house and write Huichun. It is the time for the younger generations to show their calligraphy skill to the elders. Those who can write good huichun will get a bigger red packet (紅包).
