As an indigent university student, I would occasionally treat myself to dinner at the dirt-cheap Kam Sang in the then borderline-squalid part of Queen St opposite the Town Hall. But the Tai Tung in snazzy Swanson St was of a different order altogether.

Lured there one night by better-heeled law students, I broke into a cold sweat at the sight of the menu: the combination fried rice was, if I remember rightly, 40c instead of the 25c I was accustomed to.

Morita is dearer than both the Kam Sang and the Tai Tung - to tell the truth, it's pretty pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Memories from Tai Tung Restaurant... The Tai Tung used to be in Swanson Street. There were lots of noisy and abusive cooks who looked down on us because we were waitresses. It was a great restaurant. I remember the crayfish crawling around on the floor in the basement. I remember sneaking lychees from the great bowls full in the desert space where we dished up the lychees and icecream.
