Susan K Louie is a glass sculptor  based in Auckland, New Zealand.  Her cast glass work is informed by her identity as young chinese girl brought up on a market garden.  She continues to mark New Zealand history through the medium of cast lead crystal glass, telling stories of culture and heritage.

She presented at the 4th Going Bananas Conference in the session "Visually Chinese" at 2.30pm, Saturday, 18 July 2009.

The artwork featured is a piece made in 2008 for her solo exhibition held at Tairawhiti Museum, Gisborne, October 2008 and is titled "Hinekorako Meets the Dragon".  The piece was created to acknowledge the relationship between Maori and Chinese in the community where she was born and raised.  She cast the Yin and Yang as a symbol of these two worlds and how they intertwined.

"Harvesting the Happy Heart" was supported by the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust.
