Archives New Zealand, Auckland Regional Office presents an online exhibition of photographs and documents relating to the Chinese in Auckland circa early 20th century.
Under the Immigration Restriction Amendment Act 1908, any Chinese person leaving New Zealand to travel overseas temporarily was required to fill in a certificate of registration in duplicate.
One copy went to the traveller, and the other was retained by Customs; this was used to positively ID the individual on his return.
Archives New Zealand's Auckland Chinese exhibition showcases the wonderful array of photographs, documents, correspondence and records collected by Auckland's Customs Department from the Chinese who left New Zealand temporarily in the early 20th century.
