Roast Pig Pits were constructed by Chinese gold miners and Market gardeners in the late 1880s and 1900s.  There are a few still being used today.

Roasting a whole pig was the social event for large groups of hard working migrants to gather and share gossip and news - similar to the BBQ functions which are so common around the world today.
