Chinese Sports Tournament
Topic type:
The Annual New Zealand Chinese Sports Tournament is a nationwide cultural event that has been taking place since 1948.
The inaugural tournament was held in Wellington in 1948. It was initially scheduled to take place annually on the 10th October, the national day of the Republic of China and was therefore called the 'Double Tenth' Tournament.
Recently the tournament has taken place at Easter, making it less political and more practical due to the public holiday.
The location rotates annually between Wellington, Dunedin, Auckland and Christchurch and usually lasts several days, with social events and cultural performances in the evenings.
The sports competed in include basketball, soccer, volley ball, touch rugby, netball, lawn bowls and golf.
