Mike took us for lunch to the Sun-Sun Restaurant, on the second floor of a nondescript building across from the train station in downtown Auckland. They served by far the tastiest (and not at all oily) dim sum that I have ever eaten. We also had paluka, a local fish, in a tasty medley of vegetables and a light garlic sauce. It was one of those places in which only Chinese is spoken and only Chinese generally frequent.(http://www.travel-library.com/asia_pacific/new_zealand/nz_20050215113005.html
Sun Sun had one of those old lifts, with double metal doors. My young son was going up and down it one day, until the lift got stuck, and it took a wee while to get him out. (HW)

Tao Yuen was started in 1971 by Gordon Fong, from Siyip. The Restaurant was about 3 doors up from St James Theatre - between Wellesley Street and Wakefield Street block, Queen Street, Auckland.
Gordon Later had Golden Gate in New Lynn and Eastern Palace in Highland Park.
