Hi
Ana,
Maybe
you would like to publish the following as a follow-up to “Nice thought, Len,
but.....” article on Monday, 23 July, 2012.
Thanks Sideswipe for correcting Cantonese-speaking book launch attendee's
mis-interpretation of Mayor Len Brown's Putonghua (Mandarin) speech.
After reading Monday, 23 July 2012, edition of Sideswipe, Cantonese-speaking
attendee told his wife, "So the Mayor spoke Mandarin......I thought he was
speaking bad Cantonese!"

Sons of the Soil is not just a story about Chinese market gardeners and their contributions to New Zealand but also it is a piece of history we need to preserve and keep alive for our future generations

Nice thought, Len, but ...
Two new books on the history of New Zealand's Chinese market gardeners - Sons of the Soil and Success Through Adversity - were launched in Mangere on Saturday. Auckland Mayor Len Brown, doing the honours, began his speech to the 600 guests in Putonghua (Mandarin). The gesture was much appreciated by the growers, even though few would have understood him. Coming from southern Chinese pioneers, they speak Cantonese. Sideswipe 23/7/2012
